Laura Smith Blair

A native of Marin County who grew up along California’s rugged central coastline, Laura Smith Blair’s creative vision is deeply rooted in her coastal upbringing. Her formal artistic journey began in 1987 at the University of California, San Diego, where she completed her BFA in Visual Arts. During her time there, she studied under influential figures such as Faith Ringgold, and her early work reflected the era’s conceptual trends—specifically identity-based performance art.

To further refine her craft, she spent two summers studying painting at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Following her graduation, she spent several years (1991–1994) apprenticing with master muralist Dong Sun Kim. This period marked a transition toward a more disciplined, technical approach as she collaborated on a variety of high-end residential and commercial commissions.

Career Milestones

• Muralist (1994–2009): Driven by a love for large-scale work, she spent fifteen years transforming urban landscapes and private homes through expansive mural projects.

• Gallery Ownership (1999–2006): Alongside her husband, she co-founded The Canvas, a gallery dedicated to showcasing emerging talent. This experience eventually redirected her personal focus back toward fine art painting.
