Katherine Kousi’s dynamic pieces have the ability to stop the viewer in their tracks, making you interact and then leave speechless. The uniqueness about Katherine Kousi’s work is that you want to think she makes beautiful paintings. You want to think they are delicate, pretty, and in some of the more subtle abstract works, maybe even naive. But that is all a trick. If you don't look closely, you will only see the top most layer of what is actually a densely built surrogate structure encasing her soul. These are wall sculptures and they are made by hand with materials one might find unusual: Wood, glycerine, lath, wire, resin, insect remains, dried foliage, pigment. And they are as toxic to make as they are beautiful to behold. In their beauty, they successfully masquerade as paintings. But in their making, you come to know every piece is wildly unique and always hand crafted. In 2019, Katherine was named in the Top 10 female artists at Art Basil Miami. Katherine lives and works in Malibu, California and Charleston, SC.
